Description

Students will journey through the rich history and evolution of the screen medium and develop a deeper understanding of the moving image that continues to shape our cultural landscape. The unit will explore how screen production has transformed from the silent film era to contemporary streaming platforms, investigating the significant historical and cultural moments that have influenced screen production, distribution, and audiences. Through close analysis of selected screen texts, students can identify, evaluate, and critically analyse the cultural, historical, and theoretical practices of artistic choices and aesthetic decisions made by filmmakers.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critically reflect on the cultural, technical and economic developments that have shaped the screen industry.
  2. Analyse historical and contemporary screen movements and genres to effectively illustrate how they have influenced industry practices.
  3. Examine critical approaches within screen studies for how they shape interpretation and illuminate social/cultural contexts.
  4. Explain how different aesthetic possibilities of screen texts impact storytelling and convey meaning to enhance the overall cinematic experience.
  5. Outline Indigenous perspectives in screen introducing their historical and contemporary imprint.

Unit Content

  1. An overview of the history and evolution of the screen medium.
  2. Exploration and analysis of key screen history movements.
  3. Explanation and examination of major theoretical approaches developed in screen studies.
  4. Analysis of the aesthetic possibilities of screen texts.
  5. Examination of the impact of screen production on shaping and reflecting cultural values, societal norms, Indigenous voices and collective identities.
  6. Introduction to library and research skills, basic editing and video essay structure.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.
