Description

This unit comprises selected theoretical and practical skills related to sports injury management and sports massage. Students will learn how to prevent and manage sports injuries by applying anatomy and physiology knowledge to real-world examples Injury prevention, sports first aid, sports strapping and management of injured athletes will be covered. Students will also learn how to effectively administer sports massage with the goal of assisting sports performance and recovery from injuries.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

Online Students will be required to participate in 2 x laboratory sessions conducted at the Joondalup Campus during the semester. Please see timetable for dates and times.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of injury prevention which reduces the risk of injury in sport and exercise settings.
  2. Apply injury management techniques which minimise the impact of common sporting injuries.
  3. Discuss the benefits of sports massage with reference to the physiological, performance and prevention features.

  1. Equipment, facilities and concepts required for injury prevention.
  2. Roles and responsibilities of the sports trainer.
  3. Theoretical and practical application of the immediate care of sports injuries.
  4. Etiology, signs and symptoms, and management of common sports injuries.
  5. Strapping for the prevention and management of sports injuries.
  6. Sports massage.

Additional Learning Experience Information

The unit is highly interactive and will be conducted under the guidance of both academics and industry specialists. Tutorials are interactive, and students work in groups to consolidate lecture material and to solve case studies. Students enrolled in the online version of the unit will engage in online lectures and laboratories and will have the opportunity to practice their skills in the first laboratory session. Laboratories for the online students will be scheduled several weeks apart to allow students to refine their skills prior to being assessed.

Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit information may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete).
