Description

This unit is comprised of three coaching and performance-orientated modules of which students must complete two. The three modules can be chosen from; aquatics, volleyball and athletics. Students enrolled in Bachelor of Education (Secondary Health and Physical Education) course must select aquatics and athletics. Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science (Exercise & Sports Science) course must select athletics and volleyball. This unit focuses on the development of practical skills and the relevant exercise and sports science concepts required to effectively coach, enhance athletic performance and prevent injury.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Create and implement effective training programs and skill progressions for the development of athletic and/or aquatic and/or volleyball performance for athletes of different ages.
  2. Apply the rules, regulations, tactics and strategies required to compete in athletics and/or aquatics and/or volleyball.
  3. Apply exercise and sports science knowledge to improve performance and prevent injuries in athletics, aquatics and volleyball.
  4. Integrate current coaching methods and principles to enhance learning.
  5. Demonstrate practical skills to participate in athletics and/or aquatics and/or volleyball.

Unit Content

  1. Principles and practices of exercise and sports science used to develop athletics and/or, aquatics or volleyball performance.
  2. Biomechanical principles relevant to each sport to improve performance and/or prevent injuries.
  3. Principles and practices of coaching applied to athletics and/or, aquatics or volleyball performance.
  4. Practical applications associated with skilful performance in athletics and/or aquatics or volleyball.
  5. Rules, tactics and strategies relevant for each sport.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
