Description

This unit provides students with the scientific foundations of physical conditioning of athletes across a broad range of team sports. Students will learn how to conduct physical assessments and apply the results to design and deliver appropriate conditioning programs that improve the athletic performance of individuals and teams. The unit content ensures students gain insight into diverse cultural, sex and age considerations and learn how to prescribe periodised strength and conditioning interventions for diverse socio-cultural groups.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed SPS2203.

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded SPS3110.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Assess the strength and conditioning needs of athletes of varying age, sex, playing status and socio-cultural backgrounds.
  2. Design exercise interventions to improve the physical and physiological conditioning of team sport athletes.
  3. Apply knowledge of the physical conditioning periodisation process when designing training programs.

  2. Use of assessment data for optimising exercise prescription for team sport athletes.
  3. Considerations for exercise prescription with team sport athletes of varying age, sex, playing status and socio-cultural backgrounds.
  4. Periodisation considerations when prescribing strength and conditioning for team sport athletes.

Practical laboratories allow students to conduct a needs analysis, design training programs and conduct physical assessments for athletes from a range of different team sports. Industry experts will be engaged to showcase current best practice. Academic literacy skills are further developed through an exploration of contemporary strength and conditioning literature.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
