Description

This unit examines the physiological function and adaptability of the various metabolic energy systems. Special emphasis is placed on their role in improving exercise performance with training and recovery. In addition, environmental factors (altitude and thermal physiology), ergogenic aids and over-training are covered within the context of their effects on human performance.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed either SPS2201 or SPS2505

Equivalent Rule

Unit was previously coded SPS3301

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate metabolic function at rest and during exercise.
  2. Assess mechanisms of fatigue and limitations to exercise performance.
  3. Describe the acute and chronic effects of exercise training on the endocrine system.
  4. Explain the hormonal and cellular mechanisms responsible for adaptation to exercise.
  5. Identify the major physical activity related risk factors associated with metabolic, neurological and cardio-respiratory disease.

Unit Content

  1. Energy, work, metabolic and mechanical efficiency.
  2. Energy utilisation during exercise.
  3. Mechanisms of exercise induced fatigue.
  4. Metabolic, hormonal and cell signaling responses to exercise.
  5. Exercise, training and disease.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures and laboratories.

Assessment

GS1 GRADING SCHEMA 1 Used for standard coursework units

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
