Description

This unit will provide the student with strategies and skills to prevent, manage and rehabilitate common injuries associated with football. Screening of players, injury prevention measures, injury assessment, acute management, rehabilitation and integration back into full training and competition will be covered, and students will have the opportunity to complete the Sports Medicine Australia Level 1 Sports Trainers qualification.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Identify common injuries in football and the risk factors associated with these injuries including the associated anatomical, physiological and pathological characteristics.
  2. Propose measures to reduce the modifiable risk factors associated with football injuries.
  3. Apply the principles of acute treatment of injuries.
  4. Examine the principles of rehabilitation of injuries.
  5. Compare the various roles of the multidisciplinary team in the provision of sports medicine in football.

  1. The role and responsibilities of the sports medicine team in football.
  2. Principles of acute injury management in football.
  3. Prevention, assessment and rehabilitation of common football injuries.
  4. Tendinopathy management.
  5. Concussion management.
  6. Rehabilitation and return to play in football.
  7. Identification and appropriate management of serious injury and illness.
  8. Load monitoring and modification.
  9. Sports Medicine Level 1 Sports Trainers Qualification.

Lectures, seminars and performance laboratories.

Students please note: The marks and grades received by students on assessments may be subject to further moderation. All marks and grades are to be considered provisional until endorsed by the relevant Board of Examiners.

Due to the professional competency skill development associated with this Unit, student attendance/participation within listed in-class activities and/or online activities including discussion boards is compulsory. Students failing to meet participation standards as outlined in the unit plan may be awarded an I Grade (Fail - incomplete). Students who are unable to meet this requirement for medical or other reasons must seek the approval of the unit coordinator.
