Description
In this unit students will be provided with a thorough overview of the clinical exercise physiology industry in order to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to work as an accredited exercise physiologist. Students will facilitate the integration of their knowledge into the clinical setting through the completion of at least 500 hours of industry-based practice in an approved industry setting. Completion of this industry-based unit satisfies the practical placement requirements needed for Exercise Physiologist accreditation, as set out by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).
Prerequisite Rule
Students must pass 1 unit from SPS3112
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Assess and prescribe exercise for clients with a variety of conditions, safely and efficiently, ceasing, modifying and progressing treatments as required.
- Communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written forms with clients and other professionals.
- Conduct basic clinical assessments of fitness and function and recognise and interpret the findings of those assessments in terms of the main issues likely to be responsible for those problems.
- Determine the appropriate exercise management on the basis of clinical assessment, the physiological effects of various treatment modalities and the known contraindications of specific treatments.
- Educate clients with regards to the prescribed exercise and appropriate equipment.
- Identify conditions that are not appropriately treated by an exercise program.
- Identify when it is appropriate to seek advice and assistance from more experienced staff.
- Practice in an ethical and professional manner as an accredited exercise physiologist.
- Recall and relate basic sciences and exercise physiology theory, and apply this knowledge when assessing and prescribing exercise for clients.
Unit Content
- 500 hours of supervised clinical practice. Broken down, this includes evidence of a minimum of 140 hours of practical placements in the area of exercise delivery for apparently healthy clients, and a further minimum of 360 hours with clinical populations, split across the major areas of neuromuscular / musculoskeletal (minimum of 140 hours) and metabolic / cardiopulmonary (minimum of 140 hours).
- Case studies based on scenarios commonly experienced by the clinical exercise physiologist.
- Day-to-day procedures applied by clinical exercise physiologists across a variety of client groups.
- Evaluation of an industry practice plan using clinical exercise physiologist concepts, including systematic observation, work experience and a topic paper.
Additional Learning Experience Information
Laboratories, seminars and supervised clinical practice.
Assessment
