Description

In this unit, students develop their research skills by planning a research project designed to demonstrate and extend existing knowledge in the exercise and sports science domain under the supervision of an academic staff member (or members). This includes reviewing scientific literatureon the topic of the research project, generation of research questions and hypotheses, clarification of the objectives of the research project, designing a study to test the hypotheses, writing up a research proposal, and making an oral presentation explaining the proposed research project to an academic audience.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Complete a research project risk assessment and management plan.
  2. Demonstrate the procedure used to obtain university ethics clearance to conduct research.
  3. Describe relevant theoretical frameworks for exercise and sports science research.
  4. Design a research project with appropriate methodological and analytical techniques.
  5. Develop a research project proposal.
  6. Identify an exercise and sports science topic for investigation.
  7. Present a research project proposal to an academic audience and incorporate relevant feedback.
  8. Undertake and present a review of relevant academic literature in order to generate research questions and hypotheses.

Unit Content

  1. Ethics issues and ethics clearance.
  2. Handling questions and comments from the audience after presentation.
  3. Identification of research questions/s.
  4. Oral presentation of the proposal to an academic audience.
  5. Research proposal preparation.
  6. Research proposal review and revise process.
  7. Review of literature and theoretical framework.
  8. Risk assessment and management plan.
  9. Submission of revised proposal.

Additional Learning Experience Information

The unit will be based on individual consultation with each student. Initially these consultations will be with the Unit Coordinator, continuing until a suitable project and supervisor have been identified. From this point on, the student will consult principally with the Supervisor. The Unit Coordinator will, however, maintain contact with the student.
