Description

This unit provides students with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for testing human performance in exercise and sports science research. Students will engage with the contemporary literature in the field and relate the information obtained to their thesis research project. Students design a study, collect data and present their findings in both oral and written formats. A feature of this unit is a series of guest lectures by experts in different areas of exercise and sports science such as exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control, sports psychology and statistical analysis.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass 1 units from SPS3301

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Design a study to examine the reliability and/or validity of a measurement relating to human performance.
  2. Evaluate the quality of a study in exercise and sports science.
  3. Interpret results of a study from collected data and analyses.
  4. Present findings from a study using oral, visual and written methods in a clear and concise manner.
  5. Review contemporary research in the field of exercise and sports science in relation to human performance testing.

Unit Content

  1. Factors to be considered when assessing human performance.
  2. Oral presentation of exercise and sports science research projects.
  3. Reliability and validity of measurements.
  4. Research methods and paradigms in exercise and sports science.
  5. Sample size estimation.
  6. Small group peer review of exercise and sports science research projects.
  7. Statistical analyses frequently used for exercise and sports science research.
  8. Study design for exercise and sports science research.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Lectures including industry quest speakers, tutorials and laboratories.
