Description

This unit is designed to provide the strength and conditioning specialist with an understanding of the prevention and rehabilitation of common musculoskeletal sporting injuries. Students will learn practical and theoretical aspects of exercise rehabilitation with an emphasis on the transition between acute management and exercise commencement,and to the long term management of injuries as part of a comprehensive strength and conditioning plan.

Students must pass 2 units from SPS5133, SPS5134

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Analyse the anatomical, physiological and pathological characteristics of selected sports injuries.
  2. Identify injury prevention measures of dynamic control that can be enhanced with strength and conditioning programs.
  3. Identify selected psycho-social issues associated with specific populations involved in rehabilitation programs.
  4. Incorporate integrated rehabilitation training programs for athletic populations.
  5. Incorporate outcome measures from testing protocols to examine the efficacy of rehabilitation programs.
  6. Understand the importance of integrating with the health professions as a member of a multi-disciplinary team involved in rehabilitation.

  1. ACL injury risk management.
  2. Assessing and reporting outcome measures.
  3. Bone health and stress factures.
  4. Hip pathology diagnosis and management.
  5. Issues related to concussion management.
  6. Management and prevention of ankle injuries.
  7. Management and prevention of hamstring and groin injuries.
  8. Management and prevention of tendinopathies.
  9. Pathological aspects of musculoskeletal injury and healing.
  10. Psycho-social issues associated with rehabilitation.

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.
