Description

This unit is designed to provide students with advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to effectively assess the physiological attributes of athletes. This will involve exposure to a variety of anthropometric, strength, power, and endurance testing protocols typically used in clinical and sporting settings. Students will also be trained in the interpretation and delivery of performance testing results to clients and coaches.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must have passed SPS5113, SPS5133 and SPS6104.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Design a presentation for a coach on the topic of sports performance testing batteries.
  2. Construct an Athlete or Sport Analysis Report in accordance with United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association requirements.
  3. Interpret physiological performance data and formulate individual training program recommendations based upon the data collected.

Unit Content

  1. Methodologies and procedures used in talent identification.
  2. Use of physiological testing in a training/rehabilitation program.
  3. Analysis and interpretation of data for presentation to coach, athlete, and scientist.
  4. Design and selection of appropriate performance tests.
  5. Ethics of testing procedures and use of results.
  6. Reliability and validity in testing processes.
  7. Theoretical basis of testing protocols: muscle function, anaerobic threshold, and aerobic power.

Learning Experience

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.

Additional Learning Experience Information

This unit will be delivered using technology-enhanced learning. Students will be required to access and use a variety of digital learning materials to prepare for and engage in discussion and activities related to physiological tests for elite athletes. Learning activities and assignments will develop communication and analytical abilities of students as well as providing opportunities to discover, discuss and apply theory in a meaningful context. Students need to be actively engaged in the unit by reading the required readings, listening to recorded lectures and participating in critical discussions related to physiological tests for elite athletes within Blackboard.
