Description
This unit is the introductory curriculum unit of study for students who wish to undertake a major in the teaching of Society and Environment at lower secondary and senior school level. The unit examines the theoretical perspectives for understanding the Society and Environment learning area. Areas of focus include, conceptual and process outcomes of the learning area, outcomes based teaching and learning, resources, planning for learning, concept building and, teaching and learning skills for the early adolescent and young adulthood phases of development.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Describe the conceptual and methodological contributions of the Social Science disciplines to Society and Environment.
- Explain the rationale for the Society and Environment Learning Area within the context of the Curriculum Framework and the Australian Curriculum.
- Explore various planning formats for a range of learning experiences.
- Plan and prepare a sequence of learning experiences.
- Review and utilise a range of resource materials.
- Review teaching-learning processes for concept building and skills development.
- Utilise the Society and Environment Learning Area Statement to develop knowledge, skills and values that can be taught effectively in the learning area.
