Description

This unit will investigate the nature and scope of the Social Science learning areas within the context of contemporary curriculum documents, including the conceptual foundations from which they are derived. In addition, students will explore how children learn concepts, skills and values, and will provide opportunities to experience Active and Informed Citizenship. Students will also have the opportunity to develop a range of socially just and culturally responsive pedagogical and assessment strategies.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Critique a range of learning and teaching resources in social science education.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the nature, scope and purpose of the social science learning areas of the Australian and Western Australian curricula.
  3. Design integrated learning and teaching plans to enhance childrens learning of concepts, skills and values in the social sciences.
  4. Develop assessment processes and strategies for social science learning areas.
  5. Devise Active and Informed Citizenship experiences for childrens learning.
  6. Justify and apply an inquiry based pedagogical approach to social science education.

  2. Assessment practices appropriate to the social science learning areas.
  3. Models of planning for learning and teaching in the social science learning areas.
  4. Resources for planning, teaching and learning the social science learning areas.
  5. The Australian and Western Australian social sciences curricula and the over-arching principle of sustainability.
  6. Theory and practice of inquiry based pedagogies.
  7. Written and oral presentation principles in social science education.
