Description

This unit focuses on developing knowledge of curriculum content and pedagogical practices for planning and implementing quality teaching and learning programs that develop the concepts, skills and processes associated with Science and the Social Sciences in early childhood settings. Pre-service teachers will examine current curriculum documents that outline learning goals for these learning areas in early childhood. The relationship between theory and practice for teaching and learning in these areas will be emphasised in the development of effective pedagogical practices. Pre-service teachers will participate in practical workshop experiences to develop an understanding of the importance of first hand experiences, social interaction and guided inquiry in supporting young children's learning.

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe research-based pedagogical practices, contexts, materials and resources for the development of quality Science and Social Science programs for young children.
  2. Describe the philosophy underpinning the teaching and learning in Science and the Social Sciences pertinent to young children.
  3. Explain the early years' planning cycle in relation to Science and the Social Sciences.
  4. Outline the ways in which the concepts, skills and processes of Science and the Social Sciences can be integrated across the entire curriculum.
  5. Summarise the concepts, skills, values and processes of current curriculum documentation for Science and the Social Sciences which form the basis of learning programs for young children.

Unit Content

  1. Theories and processes of learning pertinent to Scientific and Social Science Inquiry.
  2. Relevant curriculum documents.
  3. The role of the educator in planning for and facilitating the development of concepts, skills, language and attitudes in Science and the Social Sciences.
  4. The integration of science and social science concepts, skills, values and processes across the curriculum.
  5. Appropriate planning processes, pedagogical practices (including play) and resources for developing learning experiences

Additional Learning Experience Information

May include: Lectures, Directed reading, Videos and Workshop experiences.
