Description

Field Placement 2: Honours comprises of two components: a supervised Social Work practice placement of 500 hours and academic study. This unit addresses the accreditation and practice standards of the Australian Association of Social Workers. Students demonstrate their integration of academic study within the context of participation in a professional community of practice. Students build on and consolidate practice skills and knowledge and further develop skills infield research. Student skills and knowledge are supported and developed through the use of professional supervision on placement, research supervision of thesis work in addition to supportive university liaison officers and formal integration sessions. Due to the experiential and active participation requirements of this unit, new enrolments are not accepted after the end of week 2 of the teaching period.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Apply social work practice and research skills in the context of the agency setting using empirical and theoretical knowledge.
  2. Appraise the legislative and policy context of the placement agency's work and effectively evaluate how the interaction between the person, situation and context shapes social and individual problems.
  3. Employ effective communication strategies specific to the social worker's role within an organisational context.
  4. Apply effective professional judgement that is responsive to ethical dilemmas that arise during placement, using supervision to enable self-monitoring, self-regulation and reflection.
  5. Collaborate effectively with clients and colleagues to fulfill the functions of a social worker's role, within an organisational context.

  2. Contemporary social work practice environments.
  3. Ethics and practices of data analysis and field research.
  4. Exploring the social work role.
  5. Models of reflective practice.
  6. Professional and personal boundaries.
  7. Types of supervision.
  8. Values identification, relevant social work knowledge and skill development through field placement and supervision.

Informal vivas may be conducted as part of an assessment task, where staff require further information to confirm the learning outcomes have been met. Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
