Description

This unit introduces students to computer based design packages used in both 2D and 3D design. Students develop skills in using the main computer aided design programs and applications. A focus of the unit is the use of computer designs as production tools. This includes exploration of the use of computers in 3D and 2D printing and laser cutting/laser engraving. Case studies of the application of computers in the design industry will illustrate the appropriate use of these technologies.

Prerequisite Rule

Students must pass unit TDD1101 before being allowed to enrol in the this unit.

Equivalent Rule

Previously coded TDD2203

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Use computer based design to create plans, sections and elevations relevant to major design disciplines.
  2. Describe methods, such as file formats, used to reproduce and transmit CAD information.
  3. Describe the application of CAD to the fabrication of physical objects.
  4. Design and produce a basic 3D model of an object using CAD.
  5. Use a CAD software package proficiently, and print completed and accurate CAD drawings.

Unit Content

  1. Basic 2D drafting and 3D modelling.
  2. Basic concepts of 2D and 3D geometry.
  3. Referencing and organising CAD data.
  4. Problem solving with materials related to CAD.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Class activities focus on introducing students to various printing technology. Students will be taught CAD applications and operating 2D and 3D printing machines to produce design objects. Lectures will introduce students to the contextual and cultural relevance of printing.
