Description

This unit examines how 3D designers create visually and emotionally stimulating designs that communicate information or convey particular messages in a spatial context. Students will explore the relationships between furniture and spaces and produce designs for interior furniture and fittings. They will produce scale models to represent their concepts.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Conduct research and use it to create original ideas.
  2. Create a 3D spatial design package that includes 3D scale models, technical drawings and specifications.
  3. Interpret and/or analyse the design brief/narrative of a range of historical and contemporary designs.
  4. Plan, implement, and manage a design process.
  5. Understand historical and contemporary national and international contexts for design.

Unit Content

  1. Advanced model-making techniques and materials.
  2. Design packages.
  3. Introduction to the concepts of advanced model making.
  4. Investigate sustainable materials and their use in design.
  5. Research into historical and contemporary furniture and furnishings design.
  6. The design process: client-concept-creation.
  7. Use graphic presentation methods to present research findings and final concepts.
  8. Write reports and executive summaries on design work.
