This unit aims to provide an overview of the contemporary global hospitality and tourism industries, introducing students to the nature of hospitality and tourism organisations. Current trends and issues impacting on hospitality and tourism industries, including sustainability, are explored. Through an experiential field trip the unit allows students to apply theoretical principles and investigate the economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts of hospitality and tourism in an applied industry setting.

Students will engage in learning experiences through ECU Blackboard as well as additional ECU learning technologies.
On campus students will attend a weekly on-campus lecture and tutorial. Online students: Regular online access is required. The program will be available via Blackboard. The teaching and learning approach in this unit is enhanced through in-class discussions or online of practical industry case studies, where the skills of working effectively with others (specifically team work, task collaboration and working productively with people from diverse cultures), communicating effectively, critical appraisal and the ability to generate ideas are emphasised. This unit also provides for engaged teaching and learning where guest lecturers from industry are invited to share experiences, providing students with industry relevant information and opportunities for networking. The lectures and tutorials are also supported by a relevant field trip. Students are required to complete individual assessment items. These items are assessed for quality academic and professional standards, including written communication (structure, language and conventions), ability to work effectively with others,critical analysis (depth of thought, development of argument, logical analysis and insight), depth and breadth of coverage, the ability to research effectively using both contemporary academic and industry sources.

This unit aims to provide an overview of the contemporary global hospitality and tourism industries. Current trends and issues impacting hospitality and tourism organisations, including sustainability, technology, and cultural and Indigenous perspectives are explored. Students are given the opportunity to apply coherent knowledge and theoretical principles and investigate the economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts of hospitality and tourism. As a key component of this unit students will also be introduced to the core skills of written and oral communication and teamwork for the tourism and hospitality industries.
