Description

This unit is designed for students wishing to undertake research in a specific topic area not covered in any other unit. It enables invited students to select a problem or issue from the wider tourism and/or hospitality industries, and will culminate in the production of a project report.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the scope and role of research relevant to the wider tourism and/or hospitality industries.
  2. Demonstrate skills in the preparation, design and implementation of research, the analysis of data, and the reporting of results.
  3. Evaluate the major research needs and priorities of sectors relevant to chosen industry.
  4. Identify and discuss in detail a topical research issue or problem relevant to chosen industry.

Unit Content

  1. This unit is an individual research-based project which allows students to undertake research on a topic of direct relevance to their field of study.

Additional Learning Experience Information

Students must attend a series of meetings with the supervisor at a scheduled time during the semester. Students should select a research area, undertake a literature review, negotiate a research topic with the supervisor, and present a research proposal for approval. Students will then undertake the approved research and write and present the report. Students are required to complete individual assessment items which are assessed for quality academic and professional standards, including written communication (structure, language and conventions), critical analysis (depth of thought, development of argument, logical analysis and insight), depth and breadth of coverage, the ability to research effectively using both academic and contemporary sources and industry relevance.
