Description

In this unit students will be introduced into the culture of academic reading, critical thinking, research and writing skills. Students will study how to acquire skills required to plan, research and write academically. Students will learn how to plan and structure an argumentative essay by analysing an essay question of interest to society. Students will be required to develop a thesis statement in response to an essay question and then use logic and supporting evidence in support of their statement. In doing so, students are required to actively read academic literature; critically evaluate and appropriately cite sources of evidence; and apply the conventions of academic writing.

Non Standard Timetable Requirements

UPU0002 utilises both online and on-campus delivery modes which include face-to-face and electronic delivery of materials, activities and assessments.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Locate and evaluate relevant academic sources in readiness for undergraduate study.
  2. Paraphrase, summarise and synthesise ideas from the literature to support academic writing.
  3. Construct sentences, paragraphs, introductions and conclusions for academic essay writing.
  4. Reference using APA style and conventions, focusing on personal responsibility and academic integrity.

Description

This unit develops strong academic reading, research, and writing skills, which are essential for students commencing their undergraduate studies at university or entering professional organisations. Students are introduced to academic writing through a step-by-step process, with a focus on sentence, paragraph, and essay structures, leading to the completion of an academic essay. Students will learn how to plan and structure an essay by analysing an essay question; critically evaluating and appropriately citing sources of information; actively reading academic literature; and using paraphrasing, summarising, and synthesising skills to integrate the ideas of other authors into their own texts.
