Description

Essential Mathematics for University explores the essential foundations of mathematics. Students will learn and develop mathematical concepts, knowledge and techniques required for further study at university (excluding undergraduate degrees that have specific mathematics prerequisites). The focus is on building mathematical skills and confidence for application to problem solving in the real world.

Must be enrolled in course type 23, 30

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Formulate and solve numerical questions.
  2. Use appropriate tools and technologies to calculate mathematical problems.
  3. Explain mathematical methods and techniques to evaluate problems.
  4. Interpret probability and statistical data to enable the formulation of conclusions.
  5. Apply data ethically to real world situations.

Unit Content

  1. Decimals, fractions, percentages and mathematical operations.
  2. Perimeter, area, volume, unit conversion, ratio and rates.
  3. Financial and business-based problems.
  4. Algebra and word problems.
  5. Linear equations.
  6. Probability, graphs and charts, measures of centre and spread, correlation, skewness.
