Description
This is a foundation unit introducing students to the methods and terminology of the visual arts. Students explore a selection of materials and associated sources, tools, techniques, and processes. The production of a materials and methods resource manual with occupational health and safety guidelines is a central element to this unit, serving as an ongoing resource for further studies.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students should be able to:
- Describe a range of materials and techniques for creating three dimensional works.
- Select a compatible range of papers, grounds, mark making tools and materials for two dimensional works.
- Identify, describe and apply basic two and three-dimensional artist materials, methods and terminology (printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture).
- Summarise basic colour theory and the application of chromatic greys in painting.
- Identify and explain the importance of occupational health and safety guidelines.
- Identify the potential for reducing waste and energy use, choosing non-toxic and recycled materials.
- The translation of visual source material to printed image.

- Workshop induction to metal fabrication.
- Materials, grounds and surface preparation for painting, printmaking and drawing.
- Introduction to painting materials and processes (watercolor, acrylic and oil).
- Workshop induction to intaglio presses in print workshop.
- Object - space relationships
- Introduction to structure and form
- Sustainable art materials and methods.
- Occupational health and safety studio guidelines, materials data sheets, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).
- Production of a materials and methods resource manual.
- Basic mould making and plaster casting.
- Construction of stretcher frame and sculptural armature.
