Description

This is a foundation unit introducing students to the methods and terminology of the visual arts. Students explore a selection of materials and associated sources, tools, techniques, and processes. The production of a materials and methods resource manual with occupational health and safety guidelines is a central element to this unit, serving as an ongoing resource for further studies.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe a range of materials and techniques for creating three dimensional works.
  2. Select a compatible range of papers, grounds, mark making tools and materials for two dimensional works.
  3. Identify, describe and apply basic two and three-dimensional artist materials, methods and terminology (printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture).
  4. Summarise basic colour theory and the application of chromatic greys in painting.
  5. Identify and explain the importance of occupational health and safety guidelines.
  6. Identify the potential for reducing waste and energy use, choosing non-toxic and recycled materials.
  7. The translation of visual source material to printed image.

Unit Content

  1. Articulation of visual arts terminology.
  2. Workshop induction to metal fabrication.
  3. Materials, grounds and surface preparation for painting, printmaking and drawing.
  4. Introduction to painting materials and processes (watercolor, acrylic and oil).
  5. Workshop induction to intaglio presses in print workshop.
  6. Object - space relationships
  7. Introduction to structure and form
  8. Sustainable art materials and methods.
  9. Occupational health and safety studio guidelines, materials data sheets, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).
  10. Production of a materials and methods resource manual.
  11. Basic mould making and plaster casting.
  12. Construction of stretcher frame and sculptural armature.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
