Description

This introductory unit aims to generate understanding of how traditional forms of printmaking, utilising intaglio and relief, are powerful methods for addressing global and personal concerns. In order to create their own images, students will, through hands-on workshops, demonstrations and contextual lectures, critically consider the working methods and concepts of contemporary and historic artists. Students will experimentally work through set projects and develop their own project by employing a range of processes, including etching; drypoint; woodcut; linocut; letterpress as well as other approaches to the printed image.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Understand how to research their studio concerns by generating source material through for eg; text, drawings, collages, test prints and photographs.
  2. Create a series of prints using a range of intaglio and relief processes.
  3. Analyse the technical, aesthetic, and historical contexts of their work.
  4. Produce artworks that demonstrate a creative approach to the printed image; with potential outcomes being either artist's books, print folios or print installations.
  5. Demonstrate professional and safe working practices within the printmaking studio.

Unit Content

  1. Drawing and collage processes for printmaking.
  2. Plate / block making and printing techniques.
  3. Tone and colour printing.
  4. The historical and contemporary context of intaglio and relief images.
  5. Conceptual application of print processes to contemporary concerns.

Learning Experience

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU Blackboard.
