Description

This introductory unit aims to generate understanding of how traditional forms of printmaking, utilising intaglio and relief, are powerful methods for addressing global and personal concerns. In order to create their own images, students will, through hands-on workshops, demonstrations and contextual lectures, critically consider the working methods and concepts of contemporary and historic artists. Students will experimentally work through set projects and develop their own project by employing a range of processes, including etching; drypoint; woodcut; linocut; letterpress as well as other approaches to the printed image

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Create text, drawings, collages, test prints and photographs informed by historical research.
  2. Produce an experimental series of prints using a range of intaglio and relief processes.
  3. Describe the technical, aesthetic, and historical contexts of their prints.
  4. Produce a final series of prints using a range of intaglio and relief processes that evidences a critical approach to the printed image with potential outcomes being either artists’ books, print folios or print installations.
  5. Apply professional and safe working practices within the printmaking studio.

Unit Content

  1. Drawing and collage processes for printmaking.
  2. Plate / block making and printing techniques.
  3. Tone and colour printing.
  4. The historical and contemporary context of intaglio and relief images.
  5. Conceptual application of print processes to contemporary concerns.

Students will attend on campus classes as well as engage in learning activities through ECU's LMS

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
