Description

Time-based art incorporates duration into an artwork. In this unit students will explore methods of creating artworks using digital video projections, installation art strategies, and sound. In this unit, students learn to push the boundaries of installation by establishing transformative ephemeral practices that produce immersive, time-based, experiences for audiences. Key historical artists and writers are investigated to provide foundational knowledge which is then tested through active experimentation through studio-based research. These immersive practices are increasingly being used by contemporary artists, challenging expectations of conventional art exhibitions by working beyond the white cube of the gallery and utilising the street and public spaces so that art becomes part of our everyday experience.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Reflect on the importance of time-based and installation art within the contemporary visual art field to inform their creative work.
  2. Formulate source material and documentation in relation to a site to critically inform a creative project.
  3. Select and justify spatial and material decisions made in the creation of a time-based art project.
  4. Apply relevant theories to create outcomes relevant to site.
  5. Employ best practice strategies for working on site.

  1. An introduction historical and contemporary contexts of time-based and installation art.
  2. Conceptual and technical developments creating site documentation of time-based and installation processes considering audience.
  3. Constructing environments that inform the intent of time based and installation works.
  4. Develop digital technologiesvideo, sound and projection.
  5. Health and safety practices related to site-based art.

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
