Description

Students will be able to expand their approaches to artmaking in this unit as they reinvent and reimagine public dialogues through a site specific work. They will explore, test and develop speculative strategies for production and interaction within specific public sites. Learn and apply critical understandings of theories examining the role art has in interfacing with the public to their artwork. Actively collaborate with peers through critical discussion as they create artworks that respond to diverse publics, institutions, networks and infrastructure.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Plan and present a written proposal that identifies a relevant site to research and develop a creative project.
  2. Formulate source material and documentation in relation to a site to critically inform the creative project.
  3. Employ photographic silk screen, installation, video and sound and expanded painting techniques, to create relevant outcomes for a given site.
  4. Apply relevant theories to create outcomes relevant to site.
  5. Employ best practice strategies for working on site, including cultural awareness and cultural responsiveness to Aboriginal communities or language groups.

Unit Content

  1. Culturally informed decision-making in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their enduring and ongoing connection to the land, sky and sea.
  2. Identify sites for investigation, and engagement with a multiplicity of narratives within the local context.
  3. Develop a proposal that articulates a public encounter, such as diverse publics, institutions, networks and/or infrastructure.
  4. Theoretical and conceptual contemporary debates concerning public encounters.
  5. Workshops that address specific skills and processes relevant to project.
  6. Demonstrate best practice in relation to health and safety for working on site.

Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
