Description

This unit examines and applies the concepts, theories and practices behind the effective management of sport organisations. It includes an emphasis on human resource management, risk management, governance, organisational strategy, structure and culture, leadership, ethical decision making and performance management in the Australian sport industry. Students will also gain practical skills during a short-term, work integrated learning placement in a sport organisation within Australian Rules football.

Equivalent Rule

This unit is equivalent to SPM2111. SPM2111 was previously coded SPM411C, SPM511C.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Discuss the tasks, functions, skills and roles of an effective sport manager.
  2. Apply the key concepts of human resource management, leadership, governance, performance management, strategy, structure and culture to sport organisations.
  3. Determine appropriate risk management measures, taking into consideration ethical decision making, to responsibly manage a sport organisation.
  4. Practice reflection to identify learning opportunities that will develop the skills to be an effective sport manager.

WIL - Internship, Clinical or Professional placement (off-campus)

Work done in an actual workplace in which the student applies discipline-specific knowledge and skills, supervised by an industry professional separate from an ECU campus or location.

Additional Learning Experience Information

In this unit students are required to undertake a professionally supervised work-based WIL experience (placement) of a minimum of 30 hours with a sport organisation (preferably within the not-for-profit sector). Guest lecturers from sport organisations and/or government agencies are also used in this unit to enhance the learning experiences of students by providing industry insights and networking opportunities. This unit will be taught at Mineral Resources Park.

Informal vivas may be conducted as part of an assessment task, where staff require further information to confirm the learning outcomes have been met. Academic Integrity

Plagiarism

Copying the words, ideas or creative works of other people or generative artificial intelligence tools, without referencing in accordance with stated University requirements. Students need to seek approval from the Unit Coordinator within the first week of study if they intend to use some of their previous work in an assessment task (self-plagiarism).

Unauthorised collaboration (collusion)

Working with other students and submitting the same or substantially similar work or portions of work when an individual submission was required. This includes students knowingly providing others with copies of their own work to use in the same or similar assessment task(s).

Contract cheating

Organising a friend, a family member, another student or an external person or organisation (e.g. through an online website) to complete or substantially edit or refine part or all of an assessment task(s) on their behalf.

Cheating in an exam

Using or having access to unauthorised materials in an exam or test.

Serious outcomes may be imposed if a student is found to have committed one of these breaches, up to and including expulsion from the University for repeated or serious acts.

Assessment Extension
