Corrections Major

This major provides students with a unique opportunity to gain valuable knowledge in the criminal justice system, with a focus on offender management. It develops students' interpersonal and leadership skills, while building a comprehensive understanding of the theories of offender management and motivational change. Students will develop an appreciation for the complex issues surrounding offender management and how they can work within an environment that seeks to reduce recidivism. The major is relevant to students with an interest in criminology and justice, but also has a wider appeal to social work, psychology, security and other students in the humanities discipline.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply broad discipline knowledge to a range of theoretical and practical issues in corrections.
  2. Communicate knowledge of correctional ideas clearly, coherently and with independence.
  3. Demonstrate a global outlook with respect for diversity, including Indigenous cultural competence.
  4. Demonstrate autonomy, responsibility and accountability for own learning in scholarship and professional practice.
  5. Think creatively to anticipate challenges to generate correctional solutions and responses to criminal behaviour.
  6. Think critically to identify, conceptualise and analyse complex issues in contemporary correctional practices.
  7. Use digital technologies to access, evaluate and synthesise information in the discipline of corrections.
  8. Work collaboratively and demonstrate initiative to implement social, sustainable, and ethical values in criminology and justice.
