This major equips students with the knowledge and skills required for working in leadership positions in the field of family and child support. The major can be combined with other related fields of study as approved by the major coordinator such as counselling, criminology and justice, psychology and youth work so that potential graduates can work in the field of family and child support, in the context of integrated service delivery. The major adopts the frameworks of human rights and social inclusion and includes a practical placement to enable students to apply their theoretical knowledge to practice and to develop professional networks in the field. C57 Bachelor of Youth Work students are required to enrol in 2 alternative core units (in place of CSV1103 & CSV2109) as outlined in the major structure. All other students are required to undertake the standard core units in the major structure.

This major includes one year-long professional placement that needs to be undertaken in the third year of study.
All students are required to obtain a Working with Children Check card (or equivalent if resident outside Western Australia, for example, a National Police Clearance) prior to commencement of practicum placement in the final year of study.
Students will be required to attend a placement at an approved workplace in accordance with practical placement guidelines. Students can nominate their agency of choice, but ultimate approval is granted by the practical placement coordinator in liaison with the host agency. Depending on the agency, students may be required to work outside of normal work hours which may include weekends and evenings.
Students must enrol in CHN3113.
Professional placement requirements are governed by the codes of conduct of the Australian Community Workers Association and Early Childhood Australia.
Students will be required to repeat the units should they fail, as successful completion of the placements is required for completion of the course. Students must comply with the normal academic progression rules.
Coordinator of Early Intervention Programs, Family Support Officer/Coordinator, Policy Officer
Prepares graduates for a range of positions in the field of family and child support. Graduates can expect to access positions such as coordinators of family support and early intervention programs in various local and state government agencies and in the not-for-profit sector.
