Humanities and Social Sciences Education Major

Effective from 01-JAN-2021 : Code MAAAJH

This major focuses on teaching processes, content and skills that will equip students to teach social science subjects. Students aiming to fill specialist social sciences teaching roles in senior secondary (Years 11 and 12) can elect to specialise in Ancient and Modern History, Politics or Economics. Emphasis is given to inquiry-based practical work, demonstrations, independent and co-operative group learning, whole class discussions, and use of information communication technology to ensure effective teaching and learning practices in secondary Humanities and Social Sciences. Units in this program address key social science understandings and provide the content knowledge, skills and values needed to address the demands and opportunities of Humanities and Social Sciences in secondary schools.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts to create positive learning environments in social science.
  2. Communicate knowledge and ideas clearly in both written and oral formats.
  3. Critically reflect using accredited standards, mentor feedback and the ECA Code of Ethics to demonstrate responsibility and accountability and plan for continued collaborative and autonomous professional learning and development.
  4. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of social science and the Australian curriculum and teaching strategies for social science teaching in secondary education.
  5. Demonstrate leadership, exercise professional judgement and collaborate to plan, problem solve and make decisions in social science.
  6. Exercise critical thinking and judgement to plan and implement social science programs for a range of students with diverse abilities and needs, and assess the outcomes.
  7. Review analyse and synthesise knowledge of teaching strategies to plan for the content of social science teaching.
