Unit Set Information

Professional Studies Major

This unit set is aimed towards enhancing students' employability by augmenting core security knowledge and academic skills with professional employability experience. Students undertaking this unit set will study units relating to the corporate environment, including management, business analytics, governance and project management. They will then be placed with one of ECU's business and industry partners for a semester to undertake a real world project that will meet specific corporate security objectives, enhancing employability opportunities through industry engagement.

Special Admission Requirements

All applicants are required to have a course WAM of 65 or greater by the completion of their first year of study (120 cp).

Work Experience Requirement

Students have the opportunity to seek a Work Integrated Learning placement with an industry partner.

Duty of care

The School has a well developed set of risk assurance documents to the WIL Coordinator, student and host need to sign before any placement can commence.

Attendance requirements

Attendance is negotiated with the WIL industry host however the expectation is that students will be available for a full-time work placement of 5 days a week for 12 weeks.

Prerequisites

Students need to have a course weighted average mark (WAM) of 65% by the completion of their first year of study (120 credit points) to enter this unitset.

Application process

Students needs to consult with the Course Coordinator and WIL Coordinator at least one year prior to undertaking their WIL placement.

Enrolment process

Students require permission from the WIL Coordinator to enrol into the WIL unit (CSI3345) – after which the WIL Coordinator will provide the student with permission to enrol as student cannot self-enrol in CSI3345.

Implications of failing

The implications for failing the WIL unit is that students could re-take the unit however they would undertake an internal placement within ECU and would not be sent back out to industry.

Learning Outcomes

1. Assimilate a broad discipline of knowledge from many sources to various organisational protective situations to overcome insecurity in society.
2. Use structured thinking processes to analyse, conceptualise and solve complex problems in the achievement of organisational protective objectives.
3. Think creatively to identify the needs of diverse stakeholders to generate innovative solutions to protective security problems.
4. Use digital technologies to access, evaluate and communicate complex security and intelligence information from multiple and diverse sources.
5. Construct purposeful communication in a variety of formats to achieve discipline outcomes in a professional security context.
6. Review reliable sources and resources to investigate how different cultural attitudes and values impact the fields of counter terrorism, security and intelligence.
7. Work collaboratively to recognise the way in which beliefs and values of others influence the pursuit of societal wellbeing.
8. Demonstrate autonomy, accountability and judgement towards own learning and professional practice in supporting the achievement of organisational objectives.
