Intelligence and Counter Terrorism Major

Terrorism remains a significant national and international security concern impacting on all strata of society. Intelligence is a critical function that supports decision making by all relevant agencies with responsibility for countering the terror threat. This unit set provides students with the necessary foundation knowledge of, and theory informing, the nature of terrorism. Combined with the study of intelligence, process, practice and agency, students are given unique insight into the multidiscipline security domain. Students will undertake specialised study in how to diagnose intelligence problems, implement intelligence collection plans, analyse disparate data and prepare intelligence reports for dissemination based on authentic real world intelligence problems.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Assimilate a broad discipline of knowledge from many sources to various counterterrorism and security intelligence situations to overcome insecurity in society.
  2. Use structured thinking processes in counterterrorism or security intelligence contexts to analyse, conceptualise and solve complex societal problems.
  3. Think creatively to identify the needs of diverse stakeholders to generate innovative solutions to professional problems.
  4. Use digital technologies to access, evaluate and communicate complex counterterrorism or intelligence information from multiple and diverse sources.
  5. Construct purposeful communication in a variety of formats to achieve discipline outcomes in a professional context.
  6. Review reliable sources and resources to investigate how different cultural attitudes and values impact the fields of counterterrorism and intelligence.
  7. Work collaboratively to recognise the way in which beliefs and values of others influence the pursuit of societal wellbeing.
  8. Demonstrate autonomy, accountability and judgement towards own learning and professional practice in supporting societal wellbeing.
