Mathematics is concerned with the study of numbers, patterns, shapes and structure. It provides a framework and language with which to explore and communicate ideas across a diverse range of fields including science, engineering, technology and finance. Mathematics can be used to model physical processes, solve problems, analyse and draw conclusions from data, and support decision making. This major has been designed to provide students with a broad base of mathematics skills across the core areas of applied mathematics, including calculus, statistics, mathematical modelling and linear algebra. The applied flavour of the major provides the necessary background for students wishing to pursue employment or higher studies in areas of applied mathematics and statistics. Students undertaking this major have the flexibility of choosing two electives from a wide range of complementary science units.
This unit set information may be updated and amended immediately prior to semester. To ensure you have the correct outline, please check it again at the beginning of semester. In particular please check the unit and unit set offerings, as these differ according to course delivery location.
All applicants are required to have passed ATAR Mathematics Methods, ATAR Mathematics Specialist or MAT1137 Introductory Applied Mathematics, with equivalents considered.
