Nutrition and Bioscience Major

The Nutrition and Bioscience unit set is designed to prepare graduates for the rapidly evolving exercise, nutrition and health landscapes, which requires multi-skilled and agile professionals who are capable of working across sectors and disciplines. Students will obtain a strong foundation in the bioscience of the human body in the context of exercise and nutrition, including physiology and biochemistry. Graduates will be equipped with practical skills in assessment, design and implementation of exercise specific and general nutrition advice. Students should select this major if they wish to apply for entry into postgraduate Nutrition and Dietetics.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply broad and coherent nutrition and bioscience knowledge to a range of theoretical and practical exercise and sports science contexts.
  2. Think critically to analyse, interpret and solve complex nutrition, exercise and sports science situations.
  3. Think creatively to anticipate challenges and generate solutions in nutrition, exercise and sports science contexts.
  4. Use digital technologies and literacies to assess, evaluate and synthesise nutrition, exercise and bioscience information from multiple sources.
  5. Communicate nutrition, exercise and bioscience knowledge, concepts and skills to diverse population groups.
  6. Demonstrate a global outlook in nutrition, exercise and sports science situations, showing sensitivity for Aboriginal cultural competence.
  7. Demonstrate appropriate social and ethical values by working cooperatively and collaboratively in nutrition, exercise and sports science settings.
  8. Demonstrate autonomy, accountability and initiative for own learning and professional practice.

Membership

Students can apply for membership with Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA). Students can apply for membership with Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA). Graduates, who complete this nutrition major within a science degree, are eligible to apply to the Nutrition Society of Australia's Register of Nutritionists.

Note: Students who require an introduction to Chemistry should enrol in SCC1123 Chemistry for the Life Sciences, while students who have completed Years 11 and 12 Chemistry should enrol SCC1111 General Chemistry.
