Unit Set Information

Visual Art Major

Effective from 01-JAN-2019 : Code MABUTH

This major allows students to specialise in practices such as painting, printmaking or textiles, or work across interdisciplinary pathways in a range of activities within visual arts. The major also develops studio and professional skills necessary to work as a practising artist, including exhibiting work and presenting portfolios. A minor in Graphic Design is available to support this major, and some opportunities for curatorial placements are available.

Internship Option

Students may undertake a work placement with an arts organisation, where appropriate activities or projects are available.

Duty of care

The student must complete a risk management plan in consultation with the host organisation and provide copies to the organisation and the university coordinator.

Attendance requirements

Students must attend 20 working days with the host organisation. This must be planned as part of their learning agreement and detail days suitable to the organisation and the student. A meeting with the organisation and liaison to determine this plan is part of the requirement.

Enrolment process

Students must seek approval from the program coordinator and enrol in RPS3106 Professional Placement as an elective unit in their course. A suitable host organisation must be available and willing to host the student prior to enrolment and approval.

Learning Outcomes

1. Apply relevant skills and knowledge to produce and realise works, artefacts and forms of creative expression.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of the critical language and key forms of visual art practice in a regional context and through historic and international exemplars.
3. Demonstrate originality, innovation, technical competency and reflective practice across a range of visual art mediums.
4. Initiate professional opportunities through understanding of visual arts industry, development of a professional portfolio, studio skills, a community of peers and student exhibitions

Employment Opportunities

Graduates can find employment as curators, artists, designers, exhibition and installation team members and writers about arts, both nationally and internationally. Some continue to develop their research through higher degrees and others do postgraduate study and work as teachers. Graduates might also develop a public profile as an artist and undertake artwork for public and private organisations.
