Visual Arts Education Major

Effective from 01-JAN-2023 : Code MABUTK

The major is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to teach Years 7 to 12 Visual Arts, with an emphasis on visual literacy foundations. Emphasis is also placed upon collaborative teaching processes, whilst acknowledging the importance of individual creative practice.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply broad discipline knowledge to a range of theoretical and practical visual arts education challenges.
  2. Think critically to analyse, interpret and conceptualise complex visual arts learning experiences.
  3. Think creatively to anticipate challenges and generate discipline specific responses.
  4. Use digital technologies and literacies to access, evaluate and synthesise relevant information from multiple sources.
  5. Communicate disciplinary knowledge and values in professional and public contexts.
  6. Demonstrate global awareness and respect for cultural diversity, including Indigenous cultural competence.
  7. Work collaboratively and demonstrate initiative to implement social, sustainable and ethical values.
  8. Demonstrate autonomy, accountability and judgement for own learning and professional practice.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates will be eligible to seek employment in both government and non-government secondary schools teaching Visual Arts, and have the option to also work as specialist Kindergarten to Year 6 Visual Arts teachers.

Major Structure

Students are required to complete 10 Content units and 2 Curriculum units. Content units educate students in the subject area and the Curriculum units explain how to teach the subject area to others.
