English Education Major

Effective from 01-JAN-2023 : Code MABUTM

This major prepares students for a dynamic and rewarding career teaching English and Literature in secondary schools. The major combines study in the content of English (including literature, language, writing, and mass media) with studies in educational theory and teaching practice. It is distinctive and in its approach to English teaching, emphasising the importance of sound content knowledge in English and innovative approaches to texts and technologies. Students receive specialised instruction from expert teachers who are also researchers and authors in the field.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Review, analyse and synthesise knowledge of teaching strategies to plan for the content of English teaching.
  2. Exercise critical thinking and judgement to plan and implement visual arts programs for a range of students with diverse abilities and needs, and assess the outcomes.
  3. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of visual arts and the Australian Curriculum and teaching strategies for English in secondary education.
  4. Communicate knowledge and ideas clearly in both written and oral formats.
  5. Demonstrate leadership, exercise professional judgement and collaborate to plan, problem solve and make decisions in English.
  6. Adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts to create positive learning environments in English Education.
  7. Critically reflect using accredited standards, mentor feedback and the ECA Code of Ethics to demonstrate responsibility and accountability and plan for continued collaborative and autonomous professional learning and development.
