Drama Education Major

This dynamic and practically-based major prepares students for a highly rewarding career teaching drama in secondary schools. The major combines practice in acting, devising and directing with studies in educational theory and teaching practice. Students receive specialised instruction in performance and teaching from experts who are also theatre practitioners and researchers in their own right. This major is distinctive in its approach to drama/theatre practice and teaching. It emphasises the importance of content/practical knowledge in theatre and offers innovative approaches to directing and acting.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of Drama and the Australian curriculum and teaching strategies for Drama teaching in secondary education.
  2. Review, analyse and synthesise knowledge of teaching strategies to plan for the content of Drama teaching.
  3. Exercise critical thinking and judgement to plan and implement Drama programs for a range of students with diverse abilities and needs, and assess the outcomes.
  4. Communicate knowledge and ideas clearly in both written and oral formats.
  5. Demonstrate leadership, exercise professional judgement and collaborate to plan, problem solve and make decisions in Drama.
  6. Adapt knowledge and skills in diverse contexts to create positive learning environments in Drama.
  7. Critically reflect using accredited standards, mentor feedback and the ECA Code of Ethics to demonstrate responsibility and accountability and plan for continued collaborative and autonomous professional learning and development.
