Research in performing arts at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts can cover a diversity of creative and critical disciplines. This may include electronic music and sound art, historical performance practice (especially early keyboard), jazz and contemporary music, dance, choreography, physical theatre, theatre-making (acting, directing, script-writing), arts health, motion capture, theatre production, voice, and more. We have an established record of leadership and success within both conventional and practice-led-research, with many staff well-recognised in the profession as well as academia. The school boasts world-class performance facilities, extensive rehearsal and studio space, Australia’s largest collection of historic pianos, and state of the art laboratories for sound spatialisation and motion capture. Specific postgraduate research topics are typically developed in conjunction with the postgraduate coordinator or potential supervisors. We welcome applications from graduates and reflective artist-practitioners across the gamut of the performing arts, particularly those who aspire to innovation and leadership within their creative and critical practice and/or scholarship

It is desirable that all applicants contact a potential supervisor to discuss their research project before applying. PhD graduates from WAAPA are employed in a range of arts related fields, including not only academic positions and teaching, but also as critical, reflective arts professionals, arts administrators, critics, production crew, and other roles. The critical skills acquired through the design and management of a high level research skill are highly sought after by employees, as are the course learning outcomes in critical expression and communication. Australia’s 2023 national arts policy states that All Australians, regardless of language, literacy, geography, age or education, [should] have the opportunity to access and participate in arts and culture. L61 graduates are ideally positioned to fill this need.
