This specialisation provides a strong theoretical foundation for the study and practice of design across a variety of media and technologies. Design & Technology teachers at a secondary school must be knowledgeable in a wide range of workshop areas including woodwork and metalwork. The focus of the study is on materials and systems designs within the context of contemporary technologies, and it covers content, teaching and learning, and assessment strategies, as well as the development and evaluation of teaching programs.

All applicants are required to complete a major in design or design related study (three years of degree level study with at least 4 units at level 2 or above) in areas such as architecture, graphic design, industrial design, interior design, landscape design, product design, including two units of practical application in designing and producing in engineering, industrial technology (wood, metals, plastics), textile technology.
