Literacy Education Specialisation

This specialisation provides an opportunity for motivated professionals concerned with evidence-based educational practice to undertake advanced coursework in this area of study that will enable them to perform to a high standard in either a classroom, consulting or literacy leadership role.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Adapt specialised knowledge and skills making independent judgments to design, implement and evaluate innovative curriculum to suit the learning and teaching context for literacy education and optimise inclusivity for students.
  2. Create and maintain an engaging, inclusive, safe learning environment that responds to barriers, promotes children's well-being, self regulation and progression in learning.
  3. Demonstrate creativity and personal autonomy adapting assessment and reporting processes, then critically reflect on personal practice using accreditation standards to enhance professional practice.
  4. Demonstrate specialised knowledge in the policies principles, ethics and legislative requirements for literacy education.
  5. Demonstrate specialised knowledge in the theories, pedagogical practices and strategies for literacy education.
  6. Demonstrate specialised knowledge of the impact of culture, cultural identity and linguistic background of students from varying indigenous and cultural backgrounds. (1,15)
  7. Demonstrate specialised technical, trans literacy and creative skills to develop learning strategies for students with varied learning abilities.
  8. Embed sustainable practices and highlight responsibilities for a sustainable future and our shared connections as global citizens.
  9. Exercise critical thinking and judgment to identify complex issues within the teaching and learning cycle through which current practices are examined, outcomes reviewed and new ideas generated.
  10. Investigate current trends, plan, implement and evaluate innovative strategies including the use of information communication technology to foster participation in education, and enhance inclusion of students with varied special needs.
  11. Make independent, ethical judgements to manage and adapt literacy strategies to support the needs of children.
  12. Research, analyse, evaluate and communicate the theoretical concepts and methods used for effective learning and teaching for literacy education.
  13. Review, analyse and synthesise knowledge of the pedagogical practices for literacy education to create a philosophy that underpins effective teaching and learning.
  14. Work collaboratively with colleagues to evaluate and improve teaching approaches as part of ongoing professional development.
