Professional Internship Specialisation

This specialisation provides students with a unique opportunity to gain valuable real-world experience in a public, private or not-for-profit organisation. It enables students to gain full-time work experience and is an important vehicle for students to develop professional networks, undertake practice in applying theoretical concepts and principles learned during their degree, develop skills and capabilities required to succeed in their chosen profession, as well as gain a better understanding of the nature of employment and professional conduct in their chosen industry and in an Australian business context.

Internship Requirement

This internship program comprises two units. These units concentrate on the development and application of professional capabilities important to the students' chosen profession and developing an awareness of professional conduct within the Australian work context. Students will develop a professional portfolio which will help demonstrate to potential employers their developed skills and suitability for employment. The program also provides an opportunity for students to apply their disciplinary knowledge and demonstrate leadership and autonomy in the research, planning, design and implementation of a program of work which is related to their postgraduate degree studies. During this internship, students are expected to demonstrate evidence of professional conduct, initiative and professional leadership at the standards expected by industry, as well as demonstrate a capacity to work effectively in a team-based environment.

Duty of care

Procedures will be in place to ensure that enrolled students have any necessary clearances in place prior to their internship. Students will be advised of these requirements during the recruitment process. The management of risk is addressed in the induction process and by the host organisation.

Attendance requirements

Typically, students will be required to take both units in the same semester, working on a full-time basis for a minimum of 12 weeks in their assigned host organisation. These working hours may include shift and/or weekend work depending on the nature of the organisation. Working arrangement may vary on an individual basis. In addition to the 450 hours of work, students may be required to attend on-campus or virtual preparatory and end of semester seminars, as instructed by the Unit Coordinator. Internships and partners will be secured by the School of Business and Law Work Integrated Learning (WIL) team,or can be organised by the students themselves. Any opportunities secured by students will be vetted to ensure they can provide a meaningful learning experience. Terms of payment, if any, will be negotiated on an individual basis

Application process

Enrolments into the program are by application only. Entry requires participation in a recruitment and selection process. Students should be aware that enrolment into the course does not guarantee a place in the Internship Program.

Professional practice rules

Enrolled students will be issued with guidelines which outline the expected code of conduct and responsibilities.
