Instrumental Music Education Specialisation

The specialisation is designed for students who wish to teach instruments in music in individual or group settings, and direct large scale school music ensembles. Within the instrumental component, instrumental teaching pedagogies are examined, including metacognition and modelling as teaching constructs, along with the role of repertoire selection, student motivation, and administrative and legal responsibilities. The ensembles component explores rationales for ensemble programs while developing basic conducting skills, repertoire knowledge, aural awareness and director/student relationships. The ensemble component is delivered in a practical, ensemble-based setting.

Special Admission Requirements

It is desirable that all applicants have some experience either singing or playing an instrument, and have, at minimum, basic music reading skills. Units in an undergraduate course would be beneficial. This is a specialisation for those wishing to teach individual students (i.e. not in a class or group setting).
