This specialisation enables registered nurses employed in a mental health care setting to complete a qualification to master's level within their chosen discipline. Nurses working in an area of mental health are encouraged to enrol in this program where all aspects of mental health nursing will be covered. The choice of a core option unit offers students the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in a range of specialised mental health care contexts.

Students are required to be employed in a mental health care setting for a minimum of 18 hours per week. Students are required to nominate a clinical facilitator to support them in the clinical setting and will be required to demonstrate their competency in accordance with the advanced practice standards of their related professional organisation. Students will also be required to provide an agreement of support from their employer to undertake the program.

Students are in a paid employment model to undertake this program and will therefore already be employed in a mental health setting. Undertaking this program will however, enhance their career advancement opportunities within the area of mental health nursing.
