Orientation for international students

Orientation, sometimes called 'O Week' is a free program of activities to help you get ready to study as a new ECU student.

Orientation starts one week before the commencement of your classes.

International student welcome

All new international students are expected to book into an International Student Welcome session as part of ECU Orientation.

It includes information such as:

  • studying in Perth and Western Australia
  • satisfying the conditions of your student visa
  • adjusting to Australian culture
  • finding your way around Perth
  • receiving advice on staying safe in your new home

If you're unable to attend in person, please visit the Orientation canvas site to view a recording of the International Student Welcome session.

Note

You can also find more information like this in My Uni Start under Preparing.

More essential O Week events

The Official Welcome and Get Set for ECU session should not be missed. Expect equal parts fun and information!

Your Course Induction session is also essential because it provides you with specific information and study requirements about your course and units. This includes reading lists, important dates, unit advice and practicum requirements (if applicable).

Other important Orientation activities

Other Orientation activities we recommend you book:

  • Library Essentials (getting to know your ECU library and everything it has to offer)
  • Essential Study Skills (academic writing and referencing, using technology and much more)
  • Balancing Life and University (adjusting to life as a full-time student)

What does
that mean?
Here's a quick guide to some of the things we mention during the Orientation stage.
  • Your course induction session (also known as school induction) is an Orientation event that provides you with specific information and study requirements for your course – including book lists, important dates, unit advice, practicum requirements (if applicable), as well as an opportunity to meet staff and students in your school.

    As a minimum, you're expected to attend a Get Set for ECU session and your course induction during Orientation. International students are also expected to attend the International Student Welcome.

  • This is your official welcome to ECU as part of Orientation. This session is all about helping you transition to university life and is essential for all commencing students. It's fun, informative, empowering and designed to help you Get Set for ECU. Register at the Orientation webpage.

  • International Student Welcome is a compulsory event for new international students during our Orientation period. This event provides information about:

    • studying in Perth;
    • satisfying the conditions of your student visa;
    • adjusting to Australian culture;
    • finding your way around Perth; and
    • receiving advice on staying safe in your new home.

    It's also a great opportunity to get to know other new students.

  • A teaching period is the period during the year that a unit is offered for study, usually half of the academic year, i.e. semester one and semester two.

    There are other teaching periods throughout the year, such as:

    • Summer Session
    • Winter School
    • Practicums 1 to 8
    • Terms 1 to 4
    • Trimesters 1 to 3
    • Full Year
    • Split Full Year

    You should nominate the teaching period when enrolling in your units.
