Achieving your life-long dream

Layla Braovich grew up in the small regional town of Manjimup and chose to study a Bachelor of Education (Primary) to pursue her life-long dream of becoming a teacher.

"I chose this career because as a teacher I want to have a positive impact and make a difference on many lives," she said.

"There are many benefits of studying teaching at ECU. Teaching plays a crucial role in developing the minds of our future generations and making a positive impact on society."

Supportive environment

Layla explains that studying at ECU South West means being part of a small but very supportive environment.

"All of the lecturers, tutors and ECU staff are very approachable and provide students with continued support and guidance," she said.

"The smaller class sizes allow for interactive and collaborative learning experiences. It's more personal and you experience a greater sense of belonging."

Flexibility in career options

After years of working good and sometimes not so good jobs, Bunbury local, Andrew Denton made the decision to progress towards a career that he was most interested in, botany.

"I completed a Certificate IV in Conservation and Land Management at the local TAFE and then worked in the natural resource management industry but had come to realise for the career I was most interested in, ideally based around botany, I would need to continue my studies," Andrew said.

Studying a Bachelor of Science specialising in Conservation Biology and Environmental Management at ECU South West gives Andrew more choice in his future career options.

"The degree I am studying is interesting as the course is so broad, therefore it can lead to many different future career options," he said.

"For me, even though I know that I am most interested in botany, this course allows me to discover other possibilities that are closely aligned with my key interests."

Feel right at home on campus

ECU South West is the ideal study destination where Andrew feels right at home on campus.

"The South West campus provides a great relaxing study environment with good facilities, quiet study areas and being located amongst natural bushland, the kangaroos and other native fauna and flora are always there to study with you," he said.

"The staff are relatable, passionate and professional meaning I get a comparable degree with anywhere in the country without the hustle and bustle of city life."

Support when you need it

ECU believes that all students regardless of their personal circumstances should have the opportunity to pursue their dreams. Scholarships provide regional students like Layla and Andrew, with the opportunity to explore a unique life outside metropolitan cities while undertaking a world-class tertiary education. Both students were recipients of the Destination Australia Scholarship funded by the Australian Government.

"The Scholarship has had a profound impact on my studies at ECU. I am able to focus on my studies without any financial pressure and the award has provided me with the opportunity to follow my passion," Layla said.

"The Scholarship has allowed me to focus on my studies a lot more than I would be if I was working more than I have, reducing financial stress. It has encouraged me to continue studying in a full-time capacity which means I can begin a new, more rewarding career sooner," Andrew said.

ECU offers a range of scholarships to support students across their study journey.
