A new exhibition at Edith Cowan University (ECU) is showcasing the best in Australian news photography, offering a unique opportunity to view award-winning images from the 2023 Nikon Prize and Walkley Awards all in one place.

The Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Exhibition celebrates the achievements of Australian photojournalists, capturing incredible stories of triumph, tragedy and everyday life, in the works of Australia’s leading photographers – as recognised by the Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism.

The free exhibition is open to the public and the ECU community from Thursday 25 July, until 28 August at Gallery 25, ECU Mount Lawley Campus. It features the works of finalists across the 2023 Awards categories.

Among the images on display is the Nikon Photo of the Year by Quinn Rooney, capturing the jubilation of the Matildas during the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Quarter Final, and a stunning environmental portrait by winner of the Nikon Portrait Prize, Eddie Jim.

ECU Galleries Curator Dr Alix Beattie said ECU was delighted to be hosting the exhibition.

"The Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Exhibition celebrates the achievements of Australian photographers across a range of genres, from news and sport to portraiture and visual essays," she said.

"From more than 3000 images entered, the judges had the difficult job of selecting just three finalists in each category.

"This exhibition showcases their work and honours their skills in transforming fleeting moments into outstanding images of the year."
