Behind the scenes at Optus Stadium

Third year media & communications student Josh Dowdall was recently given a behind the scenes opportunity through the media centre and production suite at Optus Stadium during a West Coast Eagles match day.

Optus Stadium has one of the most advanced broadcast and media centres of any stadium anywhere in the world.

The West Coast Eagles in partnership with Edith Cowan University gave one lucky student and a guest the chance to see how the broadcast machine works on a match day.

Josh, a third-year media and communications student and his guest Harrison were given a tour through the media centre and production suite, as well as access to the boundary line to watch the on-field pre-game warm up and club changeroom to watch the final preparations before the team ran out. The experience was topped off with refreshments in the Sky View Lounge function room and premium seating to watch the game.

Josh got the opportunity through a student competition he won for writing an article about the greatest West Coast Eagles premiership team of all time, choosing the 1992 team in a compelling argument.

The behind-the-scenes experience provided Josh with real-world insights and unmatched industry connection.

"Experiencing the behind-the-scenes operations with the Eagles was eye-opening. It offered a rare glimpse into the intricate workings of a premier sports organisation, from media coordination to player management. Witnessing the meticulous planning and dynamic communication involved in each game day gave me unforgettable insights into sports broadcasting," he said.

"Studying media and broadcasting at ECU has been an incredibly rewarding journey. The hands-on experience and industry connections provided by the program are unmatched, offering real-world insights that are crucial for anyone aspiring to succeed in the field. From engaging with live projects to networking with industry professionals, ECU equips you with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in the dynamic media world. For future students, ECU offers a pathway to learn and apply your knowledge in ways that will set you apart in the industry."

Josh hopes to one day work in sports media and ECU provides the perfect education for that dream to become a reality.
