The world is rapidly changing through automation, globalisation, and digital technologies, driving demand for people with skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Edith Cowan University (ECU) offers industry-informed courses to develop your skills and knowledge in STEM, backed up by skills like critical thinking and creativity to give graduates that competitive edge.
In addition to industry-standard engineering facilities and a purpose-built Science building packed with state-of-the-art labs and the latest technologies, ECU's STEM courses are packed up with opportunities for practical industry experience and led by engaged academics who put students first.
An ocean calling
Drawn to the ocean from an early age, ECU student Bree Elliott spent many hours revelling in the salty air and crashing waves. Alongside Bree was her grandfather, an avid fisherman, sailor, aquarist, diver, who was also a member of local and state based marine committees with noteworthy influence.
"I cherished the time I spent in and near the ocean with him, his passion for exploring the waters sparked my interest and curiosity for the ocean that I still have today," Bree said.
"I chose to study Marine and Freshwater Science at ECU to further my understanding but also so I can aid in its protection and conservation for generations to come."
Hands-on experience
ECU's Science courses have a strong practical component where students get the opportunity to not only participate in placements, internships and industry projects but also learn through the practical experience of field camps, research projects and excursions.
Bree was surprised at the amount of hands-on experience she was exposed to during her studies.
"I have had the chance to get hands-on industrial experience during my Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placement, engage in discussions with professionals in workshops and work for lecturers as a research assistant," Bree said.
"Completing my WIL placement was a beneficial and eye-opening experience, I've been exposed to a wide range of facets of the marine consulting industry.
"This experience has extended my skills and knowledge to ensure I can be successful in the workplace upon completing my degree."
Excellent facilities and support
ECU Science students develop their STEM skills for the future by learning in state-of-the-art facilities and Superlabs.
"The School of Science laboratories are full of great technologies and resources which allowed me to get hands-on experience in my field," Bree said.
Innovative learning environments at ECU are paired with excellent support services to ensure students excel in their university journey. Study services, such as free academic support program Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS), are available to all students.
"I found the services provided by the University very helpful and believe they really supported my study journey," Bree said.
"I found the PASS classes available to be helpful in consolidating my knowledge gained during lectures and tutorials."
Helping the ocean
Bree is set to graduate later this year with a wealth of experience and skills in STEM, creative thinking, and problem-solving, and is already making steps towards aiding in the conservation of the world's oceans.
Bree currently works as a Graduate Marine Scientist, a job she was offered through her WIL placement.
"Being offered a job through the WIL placement I completed is my greatest achievement, it validated the skills and knowledge I acquired during my studies and has identified that I am competent in applying my theoretical and practical knowledge to real-world industrial problems," Bree said.
"This is a significant testament to my dedication to my academic experience at ECU."
